    Olive fruit fly remains the key pest in organic olive groves. Growers need quick and efficient answers because alternative methods to sprays (such as mass trapping or biological control) have not yet given satis-factory results. Preliminary laboratory trials were car-ried out with several active ingredients in various dosages. Efficacy was then assessed at 24 hour and 48 hour intervals after application. The article presents the encouraging results of the trials

    Agroforestry systems mixing fruit trees and annual crops are very well developed and studied in tropical countries, but they have been forgotten or neglected during the last 40 years in France and Europe. Current trends and challenges in agriculture (land access, periurban agricultural forms, inputs reduction through functional biodiversity and crop diversification) lead small farmers in France to combine annual plants and fruits with the aim to increase their field performance on a multifunctional basis. The SMART project identified about 150 projects (mostly all being organic) and further explored 40 of them, to better understand organization and adoption criteria

We aim at involving farmers in the design of innovative pilot farms, using agroforestry and agroecology to maximize ecosystemic services and minimize reliance to plant protection products. Projects are designed for long channels or for direct selling, with consequences in term of crop diversity and plot size. They started in 2013 and will be run on a long-term basis

    Favourable practices will allow beneficials, such as Mastrus ridens, to better establish in the orchard, and help control codling moths. M. ridens are often found in orchards, but its population could also be increased with releases. Practical recommendations ‱ Reduce plant protection products with negative side effects as much as possible, such as sulphur or insec-ticides, and those with broad spectrum effects like Spinosad and Pyrethrum. ‱ Reduce fertilisation between the rows to decrease grass species and possibly favour dicotyledons. ‱ Reduce mowing or soil tillage to keep a high weed cover – this acts as feed and habitat for beneficials. ‱ Set up flower strips in the alleys and around the orchard to attract insects & spiders. ‱ Maintain or renew surrounding hedges to help beneficials shelter. ‱ Set up bat boxes and/or bird nests (about 10/ha for each type)

    The VERtiCAL research project focused from 2013 to 2018 on the spatial and temporal diversification of fruit tree systems as a relevant mean for reducing pesticide use. The project resulted in the design and assessment of two fruit agroforestry systems (AFS), called "TAB" and "Durette", managed in organic farming and with specific technical and economic characteristics. The project allowed co-design experiences and led to the development of a new tool for ex ante assessment of AFS. First results show a 52% reduction of pesticides on the TAB system compared to a conventional reference system while reaching yield objectives, and a very low reliance to pesticides on the Durette system. As for biodiversity, specific richness of birds increased from 12 to 24 species on the Durette system, from 24 to 35 on the TAB system. Spatial planning fulfills the working organization, but does not make it possible to fully control pests yet. Results will be consolidated in the continuing EMPUSA project (2019-2025). Both sites are now important demonstration sites for farmers and agricultural advisors interested in implementing AFS
